Two Letter Scrabble Words

The two letter words are the single highest-value study list in Scrabble. They let you play parallel to an existing word, form several words at once, and unload an awkward tile for real points in a tight space.

The list below is generated from the local dictionary and sorted by score, so the useful J, Q, X and Z twos rise to the top.

01

Why the twos matter more than long words

Late in a game the board is crowded and there is rarely room for a six-letter play. What is always available is the gap alongside an existing word. Laying three tiles parallel to a word creates three or four two-letter words at once, and every premium square under your tiles counts in each of them.

02

The expensive twos

ZA, JO, QI, XI, XU and AX turn your heaviest tiles into instant points. QI in particular is the reason a Q without a U is no longer a disaster: two tiles, eleven raw points, and far more on a double letter square.

03

How to learn them

Do not learn them alphabetically. Group them by their second letter — the -A words, the -E words, the -I words — because that is how you will search for them at the board. Ten minutes a day for a week is enough to hold the whole list.
